Simply having the machine or equipment shut off or unplugged is not enough! Lock It Out! Keep employees and workers safe from injury and death caused by unexpected start up of an energy source, such as electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, nuclear, and thermal. Proper repairs, servicing, maintenance, or set-up of machines and equipment begin with preventing the unexpected, the accidental start up. Procedures, measures, and devices must be set in place to prevent a serious injury or death that could occur when someone thinks a machine is safely off. To ensure machines and equipment remain off means to establish a program consisting of energy control procedures, employee training and periodic inspections. Described in the OSHA standard are products used for lockout/tagout, such as lockout devices and tagout devices, singularly identified as part of the program.
